Lehigh Valley College Sponsors Three District 11 SkillsUSA Championships

(Center Valley, January 9) – Lehigh Valley College will sponsor three events – the criminal justice competition, visual communications series, and job interview competition – at this year’s District 11 SkillsUSA Championships, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. January 31 at the Allentown Fairgrounds Agriplex.

More than 400 students from several career and technical training schools in the District 11 region will take part in 52 competitions. Participating schools are Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, Bethelehem Area Vocational Technical School (and the Northampton Campus of BAVTS), Career Institute of Technology, Upper Bucks County Area Vocational Technical School, and Colonial Academy.

The students perform hands-on work in their training categories under the observation of expert judges, with first, second, and third-place finishers receiving medals for their efforts. The winning student from each category will move on to the state competition, to be held later this year at Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, with about 1,500 students taking part. Winners in the state contest will compete this June at the national event in Kansas City, Missouri.

"The sponsors in this event receive resumes from the students in their competitions," said SkillsUSA’s Melinda Stumpf. "It’s an excellent way for companies to meet talented young people who may someday be their employees – and start grooming them for career possibilities."
